Creating a Bootable Mac OS X Lion Install Disk

For anyone planning to do a clean install or just have a bootable OS X Lion 10.7 install disk ready when needed, here is the step by step guide.

I’m going to assume you already have Mac OS X Lion downloaded from the App Store, and of course, a blank DVD. All steps are done with OS X Leopard, so I also assume you have a similar setup. The procedure is pretty easy… oke, let’s begin!

  1. Go to the downloaded “Install Mac OS X Lion” app, right click and select Show Package Contents
  2. Navigate to Contents -> SharedSupport directory and copy-paste theĀ InstallESD.dmg disk image to… for example your OS X Desktop
  3. Start Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/) and insert a blank DVD on your DVD-RW drive.
  4. Finally, press the Burn button, locate and select the InstallESD.dmg disk image and you’re done.

Note: To boot from the newly created Mac OS X Lion Installation DVD, press and hold the Option key at boot time until the Boot Menu is displayed and choose to boot from the DVD or press and hold C key during boot up to start directly from the DVD.
